We’re thrilled you’ve chosen to live on campus at FIU, and we can’t wait to help you settle into your new space. Move-in is an exciting time, full of new beginnings, fresh routines, and opportunities to make lifelong connections. We want to make your transition to campus life as smooth and stress-free as possible. 

Here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth and successful move-in day.

Move-in Welcome Guide

Rapid Unload Pass 

Fall Move-in | Thursday, August 20th – Saturday, August 22nd

Students can find their move-in appointment time and room assignment details in the Housing Portal starting July 17th.

Some students may have also received a Move-In Welcome Guide in the mail. This guide includes your move-in details, a Rapid Unload Pass, packing suggestions, a list of what not to bring, important contacts, Housing Financial Services information, important dates, and a move-in map with the best routes to campus.

Please bring your Move-In Welcome Guide and Rapid Unload Pass with you on move-in day. If you did not receive one in the mail or forget to bring it, you can download a copy here.

We strongly recommend reviewing the move-in map before arriving, as ongoing construction at FIU may impact certain roads, entrances, and traffic routes.

Unassisted Move-In | Monday, August 17–Tuesday, August 18

Students may select an unassisted move-in appointment in the Housing Portal before the main move-in days. One-hour appointments will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

During unassisted move-in, students and their guests will be responsible for unloading their vehicle and moving their belongings without staff or volunteer assistance. Moving carts will be available to borrow.

Students who select an unassisted move-in appointment may not receive a Move-In Welcome Guide in the mail because the Rapid Unload Pass and move-in map do not apply to this option. However, the guide can still be downloaded from this page for helpful information, including packing suggestions, items not to bring, important dates and contact information.

Complete Pre-Check In before arriving  

A week before move-in, all students must complete the Online Check-in: 

  1. Log in to my.fiu.edu 
  2. Go to Student Tools > Student Housing 
  3. Select the Fall Check-In button 

Be sure to bring your FIU One Card and show your confirmation screen at the front desk to receive your room key. 

Move-In Day Instructions 

  • During assisted move-in on August 20–22, head directly to the check-in area in Lot 7 during your designated move-in time, which you can find in your Housing Portal. 
    • If you arrive before your move-in appointment, you'll be asked to wait in the holding lot until it's time to move to your hall's rapid unload zone.
    • University Apartments residents may go directly to their building and do not need to check in at Lot 7.
  • Rapid Unload Pass: Download and print it before arrival and place on your car's dashboard. 
  • Once you’ve unloaded your belongings, you must move your vehicle to a designated parking lot.
    • Please move your vehicle to the Cuban Memorial Lot across from Tamiami Hall if you're assigned to Panther, Parkview, Tamiami, or University Towers.
    • Please move your vehicle to Lot 5 if you're assigned to Everglades of Lakeview.
  • Allow up to 10 minutes for your One Card building access to activate after check-in. 
  • Show your confirmation screen again at the hall check-in desk to receive your key. 

Students Assigned to Tamiami Hall, Panther Hall or University Towers

Tamiami Hall, Panther Hall, and University Towers use contactless technology for card access. Before move in, you will need to make sure you have a contactless OneCard. Please go to the OneCard office located in the 1st floor of the Gold Garage and request to have your OneCard changed to a contactless OneCard. 

Weather Preparedness for Move-In

Miami may experience extreme weather conditions during move-in, including high heat, rain, and possible lightning.

A Heat Advisory may be in effect, with heat index values reaching up to 110°F. To help prevent heat-related illness, please remember: Water, Rest, Shade.

Drink water often, take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a hat or sunglasses.

Rain alone will not stop move-in operations, so please plan accordingly and consider bringing an umbrella, poncho, or rain jacket.

If lightning is detected in the area, assisted move-in operations will pause for safety. Operations will resume once it is safe to do so, following a 30-minute wait after the last lightning strike.

    Introducing Room Service for students living on campus*. Build your room with necessities from desks to bedding and your items will be waiting for you when you arrive. No packing, transporting or shipping.

    3 Easy Steps:

    1. Select and order your items
    2. Confirm your housing info
    3. Your order will be waiting in your room

    Fall Order Deadline: July 29 | Fall Delivery Date: August 13

    Room Service is powered by the FIU Bookstore in close partnership with the University.
    *Only students living in on-campus residences at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus in August are eligible to participate.
  • Move-in Carts 
    • Carts are available for checkout at each hall’s front desk to assist with move-in. 
    • You are allowed two moving carts at a time. 
    • Please note that you only have 20 minutes with the move-in cart, as we have a limited number and need to make it available for the next resident. Carts cannot be left in your room.
  • Parking & Routing 
    • Register your vehicle at parking.fiu.edu. 
    • No permit is required on move-in day for family or friends helping you move in. 
    • Park only in designated areas—do not park on grass, sidewalks, or staff spaces. 
    • The Parkview Garage is available only to students with a paid garage permit. 
    • View the route map below to avoid road closures. 
  • Room Cleaning & Maintenance
    We do our best to prepare your space before you arrive. If anything needs attention on move-in day, contact your building’s front desk and a staff member will be dispatched to assist as soon as possible.
  • Roommate/ Suitemate Agreement 

    If you’re living in a shared space, you must complete a Roommate and/or Suitemate Agreement with your roommate/suitemates within the first two weeks of moving in.  

    • Hall staff will help facilitate this conversation.  
    • Failure to complete your agreement will result in a housing block—which prevents future housing applications.

Students will be provided a welcome package, which includes Resident Assistants contacts and virtual floor meeting information.  

What to bring 

A full packing list is available in the downloadable Welcome Guide. Prohibited items include: weapons, large furniture, mattresses, candles, or anything with an open flame or heating element.

Some students find it convenient to bring only the necessities and buy additional items after consulting with roommates. Keep in mind, additional storage space is not available.
