Moving Out

Summer 2026 Move-Out

As the summer semester comes to a close, FIU Housing and Residential Experience wants to provide important information about the upcoming move-out process and help residents plan ahead.

Students who do not have a Fall 2026 housing assignment must move out of their summer space within 24 hours of their last class or by noon on Saturday, August 1, whichever comes first.

Students returning to campus housing in a different room for Fall 2026 will transition to their fall assignment on August 6 or August 10, depending on when their fall space becomes available.

Students will be notified by email of their assigned transition date by July 14.

Graduating Residents

Graduating students registered for a commencement ceremony will automatically be extended until 10 a.m. the day after their ceremony and may remain in their summer assignment.

Graduating students who are not participating in a ceremony are expected to move out within 24 hours of their last class or by noon on Saturday, August 1, whichever comes first.

Extension Requests

Extensions are available for the following students:

  • Students working commencement
  • Housing staff working for the department
  • Students with in-person finals scheduled after August 1

Students requesting an extension for one of the reasons listed above must email housing@fiu.edu by 5 p.m. on July 22 for review.

Please note that Housing and Residential Experience can only approve extensions related to academic program requirements. Students needing additional time for personal reasons will need to make alternative off-campus arrangements.

Unapproved Stays

Residents who remain beyond their approved move-out date without authorization will be charged $200 per night, in addition to the $200 improper check-out fee.

Check-Out Procedure

Residents must complete the following steps to properly check out of their summer housing assignment:

  1. Sign up for a check-out appointment in the housing portal beginning at noon on Friday, July 10. Students who do not select a check-out time by July 16 will be assigned a check-out time.

  2. Attend your RA’s closing meeting. Your RA will communicate the proper way to complete check-out. You can also contact your building’s REC or email housing@fiu.edu if you have any questions about check-out procedures.
  3. Pack early. When possible, move items out over a couple of weekends instead of waiting until move-out day.
  4. Pick up your neon move-out parking decal at your front desk. Fill it out and place it on your dashboard.
  5. Remove all personal items from your room and complete all cleaning before meeting with staff for your check-out appointment.
  6. At the time of your check-out appointment, go to your area’s front desk and let a staff member know you are ready to have your room inspected.
  7. After your room is inspected, return your key to the RA or staff member at the front desk of your complex to complete check-out.
